Season 23 - League and Cup

How it works:
This is a unique season and the only time this structure will occur. As the league has expanded rapidly, the next 5 weeks will see a group stage, with all the 1st places going into a knockout competition and all the 2nd places going into a knock out competition etc etc. The league below is our initial league season.

League Table Season 23

Start of season thoughts:
This mini season is a small league before the real thing kicks off in 4 weeks time and is beneficial to us. Although this league does not determine anything, it gives us a chance to get used to the surface, fitness and general feel of the league, before the serious business kicks off. I am unsure how we will fair in this small division, but looking at last seasons placings, the Mighty Gooners are in a good position to win this. My only aim for this season is to adjust to the differences, after 3 years playing on netball courts and the different rules.

Group Game 1
How the match went: This was our first competitive match at Eastwood 6-a-side and my only aim was to get used to the different style of football.

The match started well for us, with us chasing the ball down, working hard and creating a few chances. At half time it was 0-0, which was a fair reflection of the game.

In the 2nd half of the game our inexperience and lack of fitness started to show as too many times we were caught with one at the back, as everyone was too far up the pitch or too tired to follow their men. Alas Fort Maximus scored 2 well worked goals to win the match.

Overall I m exceptionally pleased with our 1st game, despite the loss. Once we stop playing like a Pitch Invasion side and defend properly (which will come), I see no reason why we cant challenge for top honours

Group Game 2
How the match went: This week we played our 2nd game in the mini season and hoped to make an improvement on last week. This week I didnt play as was ill, but managed to get out of bed to go and watch.

The first half started well and was a scrappy affair. Leigh Town did a majority of the attacking, although we countered a few times to create chances. Overall the first half was a tight solid game, with no clear cut chances created.

The 2nd half was the same as the first and we defended resolutely. Both goals in this game, came form the penalty spot. Leigh Town took the lead after Andy wandered into our area clearing a ball and our penalty came from an obstruction just inside there penalty area on Paul. Paul stepped up to take the penalty to equalise.

Overall a good point and a good solid performance, I was impressed.

Group Game 3
How the match went: This week we played the Mighty Gooners in a tough fixture, as they won the Eastwood league 2 seasons ago.

The match started well for both teams, with the match being a tight affair, although the Mighty Gooners were doing all the attacking. Their possession and passing paid off, as they took the lead in the 1st half with a well worked clinical goal.

The 2nd half was much the same with no real Sharp Shooter attacks and too many people in our half of the pitch. Despite this we conceded two sloppy goals, which exposed our weaknesses in this league. The only bright spot of the match was the penalty that Paul scored after the keeper broke the back pass rule.

Overall a poor game, but most importantly we learnt a lot from it. Once we get the balance between attack/defence right, then hopefully we should progress. Next week I have a plan, so hopefully we can pick up our first victory.

Semi Final
How the match went: This week we played the White Lions, one of the teams we will play against when the new league starts. This week we tried a new formation and it made us a look a bit better, but there is still room from improvement.

The first half started well with us being tight at the back and clearing our lines well, but despite this we conceded a sloppy goal to go behind. From then on we pressed forward and got a reward, a well worked goal from open play by Paul (Yes, I did say open play). The rest of the half was quite even and half time we were level.

In the 2nd half we were the dominant side pressing forward and creating chances, whilst also defending strongly. Although we defended well, we did have some lapses in concentration, but far fewer than in previous weeks. With only 1 minute to go we took a corner, they counter attacked and scored the winning goal.

Overall a good performance, which shows we are making progress. Next week we play in a 3rd/4th place playoff and hopefully should do alright.

3rd Place Playoff
How the match went: This week we played the Bamba Jangas in a match to see who is the worst team at Eastwood 6-a-side. We went with a trial formation, but it didnt go very smoothly.

The 1st half started badly and we conceded a well worked goal in under 5 minutes to set the tone for the match. For the rest of this half they had a majority of the ball and we conceded another goal. We didnt really create many opportunities and looked off the pace of the game.

The 2nd half continued in the same form as the 1st, with us playing badly and not being very good defensively.

Overall our worst performance down there so far and if we play like that every week, we will lose every match.

End of season thoughts:
We have now finished our mini season and finished bottom of the group with one point. Although we didn't win a game, we learnt a lot about how to play, which is completely different to Pitch Invasion. In the next couple of weeks we are going to be playing against a couple of other teams (based on final league position), before the start of the new season. Hopefully in the next 2 games we can use these to adapt.
