Season 16 - Division 2 (Prem, 1 & 2)

Start of season thoughts:
This is our 16th season and it should be about time to be promoted and hopefully a good season will ensure that we can do this. Although this is being written after the first match (as we were in Kavos) and we have already lost to Southend Galactico's, I feel there is enough beatable teams left to finish in the top 2. Let's hope its deja-vu, when last year we didn't lose for 8 consecutive matches after coming back from our holiday to Zanti.

Match 1
How the match went: This week although the Sharp Shooters were back in the country, we only got home 20 mins before kick off, therefore started the match with 3 players, Paul, Tom & James (GK from Spartans). By half time we were 6-0 down and at this point we had a 4th player. The match finished 10-5 and Paul was made player of the week for his hard work and endeavour. The rest of the team were put up or the award, but apparently only 1 person could get it. Next week we will have a full team for the first time in a month.
Match 2
How the match went: This was our first match since we came back form the holiday and it was imperative that we got off to a good start.
The match started well and I scored an early goal to settle us down. We then scored another good goal from Paul, but conceded as sloppy goal to go in 2-1 at half time. The first half we had lots of chances, including a shot that hit the post from Spanton and should have been leading by more.
The 2nd half started well, with Spanton finally scoring a goal after drilling it into the bottom corner. We then nearly pressed the self destruct button, after conceding a sloppy goal and gifting a goal to them after a mix up between Dave and Tom. At this point we became more direct and after Tom scored two goals, put some clear distance between us and 5 Alive with 5 minutes to go. This match was very niggly in the 2nd half, with lots of late challenges, especially on Andy.
Overall a good start to the season and hopefully against Back Of The Net FC next week, we can gain another 3 points.
Match 3
How the match went: This was a crucial match that could have gone either way and would determine how our season goes.
The match started tightly and with our main goalkeeper no where in sight. Spanton stepped in at the start, with no pads, gloves, trousers and gallantly saved as many shots as he could unprepared. After about 10 minutes of pressure we finally conceded a goal that Spanton was unable to stop. Just after the goal was scored Dave turned up and we focused on trying to claw back the deficit. I had one goal disallowed after a short corner from Andy and a left foot shot into the bottom corner beating the keeper, but the ref said it went out (which it didnt). At half time we were still losing.
The 2nd half started and we played a bit better, with James C & James S both scoring nice goals to put us into the lead. Alas we couldnt hold into this with BOTN FC scoring a decent goal and us gifting them the winner with Dave throwing it to Martin in front of our goal, needless to say he scored. I was not sure about the ref in this game, as he seemed to be a bit one sided towards BOTN FC.
Overall this was an unfair defeat, when a 2 -2/3-3 draw would have been a fair result. Hopefully we will win our next 4 and have a chance of promotion.
Match 4
How the match went: This match was a crucial game and would realistically determine how our season unfolded.
The match started tightly with neither team dominating, but it was the Fruity boys that took the lead. They scored after a deflection from the corner, which Dave could do nothing about in goal. They then scored 2 more to go into half time with a 3 goal lead. Although we were 3 goals down, we didnt deserve to be this far behind from our first half performance.
The 2nd half started badly with us conceding a 4th goal, this was where the fight back nearly happened. After the 4th goal went in we played as a team and managed to score 3 nice goals, one from Paul, Tom & me to leave 2 minutes to try and equalise. Alas it was all in vein and they scored a 5th just before the end to kill the game.
Overall a very good performance that deserved more than we got. Also thanks to Steve for stepping in at the last minute as Spanton was ill. Nest week we face RBS Utd and hopefully 3 points.
Match 5
How the match went: Tonights match was a close affair against a team which we have played numerous times.
The match started well with SS having lots of the possession and making their keeper make lots of saves. Although we pressed forward, we couldnt break the deadlock, with Andy, Paul, and I missing numerous chances.
The 2nd half started more brightly with me scoring 2 goals at the beginning of the 2nd half, one a nice foot strike and the other a miscued tap in. Both goals were assisted by Paul who nearly scored himself. We then conceded a sloppy goal to put a bit of pressure back on us, but Andy coolly slotted home his 1st goal of the season to give us a 2 goal cushion.
Overall a cracking team display which we deserved to win, possibly by more than 3 goals to 1. Anyway onto next week and promotion is still not out of our grasp, although very unlikely.
Match 6
How the match went: This match was against a new team that we hadnt played before and was a new challenge. From what I had been told about them, we were in for a tough match.
The match started well with the only high point of the game being in the first minute, when Andy scored for us to take the lead. After this point we proceeded to concede 12 more goals due to woeful defending and all round play. We havent lost this heavily since March 2005 against On Line FM
Apologies this is a short report, but all that can be said is that we were woeful and B.T. FC were much better than us. I hope they beat the Fruity Boys next week to go up, as I dont want to play them again in the near future. Onto next week against Anglo-Italia FC and a positive end to the season.
Match 7
How the match went: This weeks match was against a team that was bottom of the table and after last weeks drubbing hopefully a welcome opponent.
The match started well with us taking a 4-0 lead in the first 4 minutes, with 2 good goals form Andy, a deflected free kick from me and another a goal from Tom. At this point it looked like we were going to score few and continued to dominate. A bright moment from them was there first half penalty, which I couldnt understand why it was given, but they scored anyway. At half time it was roughly 6-1 to us.
The 2nd half started in the same vein of form and with our attacking ability managed to score another 7, with some good goals from Paul & Andy. I did feel sorry for there keeper, as he was barraged with shots. They scored a good goal from there own half, which Dave didnt see, to double there goals total. The goal scorers on the night were Paul (5), Andy (4), Tom (2), James & I (1).
Overall a really good performance and a bright end to the season which showed what we can do.
End of season thoughts:
At the start of the season I said that hopefully we can go 8 games unbeaten, which didn't happen. I feel this season we have played quite well and won 3 games in 1 season, for the first time in 5 seasons which is a great achievement. Although we finished 5th, I feel 4th place should have been ours as the team above us had 2 walk over victories. Who knows they may have beaten both of them to claim the 6 points, but hopefully what goes around, comes around. This was a solid season and hopefully something to build upon.
